Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
